About Darjeeling
Darjeeling conjures visions of serenity, of vibrant green hills steeped in splendour. A land of breathtaking beauty, crowned by the majestic Himalayas ---- the abode of the Gods. This most magnificent hill station of India , has been rightly christened "The Queen of Hills".
The beauty and ideal location of this place first caught the eyes of the erstwhile East India Company. It became the "Summer Capital" of West Bengal . A haven, away from the sweltering heat of Calcutta.
The British pioneered the Tea Plantations and the produce rightly earned the sobriquet "The Champagne of Tea" as it is popularly known today, worldwide.
Another unique feature was the launch of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) on 4 th July 1881 , which went on to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, visited by tourists from across the world. Very aptly, it is known all over as The Toy Train.
Breathtaking hills, winding roads, gushing waterfalls and lush green carpeted Tea Gardens are a feast for the eyes. Lesser known and virgin destinations are dotted all around the Kanchanjunga region, providing all diverse tourism related activities that one can dream of. Be it religion based (Buddhism), diverse cultural heritage, adventure and nature tours or pleasant pastimes like bird watching, trekking and white water rafting ------ the region offers it all.

Tiger Hill
Situated at an altitude of 2590 metres (8482 ft.) and 13 kms from the town, this spot has earned international fame for the magnificent view of the sunrise over “Kanchenjuga” and the great Eastern Himalayan Mountains . Even Mount Everest , the world’s highest peak, is visible from here. A traveller, whose vision has not been entertained with the two sights, the Taj Mahal by moonlight and sunrise from Tiger Hill, has missed a pleasure that does not lend itself to be substituted.
Batasia Loop
The world famous heritage toy train (DHR) winds its way through one out of the three loops en route to Siliguri from Darjeeling at Batasia, which is very near to Ghoom railway station. Ghoom railway station is the highest railway station to be reached by a steam locomotive. This loop is a perfect masterpiece of railway engineering. At the center of the loop stands a war memorial which reminds us of the Gorkha martyrs, who laid their lives protecting the sovereignty of our motherland. A glorious view of snowy peaks and the town can be seen from this place.
Ghoom Monastery
Ghoom has an old Bhuddhist Monastery, which displays many colourful frescoes on its walls and houses a massive image of Buddha and a large number of Tibetan Manuscripts. The monastery is said to have been built in 1875 by Lama Sherab Gyatso. It is considered to be one of the holiest monasteries as it was personally blessed by the renowned Tomo Geshe Rimpoche of Tibet. The monastey also houses rare books on Buddhism and has a statue of the 'Coming Buddha' known as Maitreye Buddha.
